Velkommen til Madeira |
The island of
Madeira has a surface area of 459 square
miles (741 km2), (35 miles long and 13 miles wide). Thanks to their excellent
geographical location and
mountainous relief, these islands have surprisingly balmy weather, with moderate humidity and pleasant average temperatures of 25ºC in the summer and 17ºC in the winter. The sea temperature is also very mild, thanks to the influence of the warm Gulf Stream, averaging 22ºC in the summer and 18ºC in the winter. http://www.visitmadeira.pt/en-gb/madeira/madeira |

http://www.madeira-web.com/PagesUK/beaches/lido.html The Lido swimming pool complex is probably the most popular bathing area in Funchal and one of the best on Madeira Island. Besides a large and a small seawater pool, freshly filled every day, it also has direct sea access for those who prefer the feel of the ocean for a swim. |
This
bathing complex, a favourite with the locals as well as the tourists, offers sun beds, parasols, changing rooms, lockers, kindergarten, table tennis, diving centre, water slide, beachwear shop, baby care room, restaurant, three snack bars, tourist information centre, first aid centre, lifeguards and a car park… An endless number of facilities! The pools of this complex received the 'Blue Flag’ award that certifies the good water quality. |

Nonnenes Dal Curral das Freiras ('Nuns Valley') is a small village nestling between almost perpendicular mountains in the heart of the island. The huge cauldron in which Curral das Freiras is sitting was either formed by erosion, which is the more recent theory, or as many still believe, by volcanic activity. |
In 1566 the nuns from the Santa Clara convent fled from pirates attacking Funchal and found seclusion here where they also brought the convent treasure. http://www.madeira-web.com/PagesUK/curral-freiras.html |

Mor på Pico do Arieiro To bilder fra samme sted på Pico do Arieiro. Grått og kaldt julen 1969, nydelig vær i mars 2014. |
The Pico do Arieiro is with its altitude of 1818 meters the third highest peak on the island. Fortunately it can be reached by car. Views are spectacular up here and when there is very good weather, it is even possible to see Porto Santo, the neighbouring island, which is situated 30 nautical miles to the north. http://www.madeira-web.com/PagesUK/pico-arieiro.html |

Eira do Serrado Viewpoint is one of the most beautiful viewpoints in Madeira. From here you can admire 6 majestic mountains and, at the foothill, you’ll find Curral das Freiras village. https://gotoportugal.eu/en/pico-do-arieiro/ |

There are several words synonymous to Monte and ‘toboggan ride’ is surely one of them! Originally a fast means of transport down to Funchal for people living in Monte, these toboggan sledges appeared around 1850. Still in use today, they attract thousands of tourists every year who want to make this exciting experience of sliding at high speed on narrow, winding streets down to Funchal. These two-seater wicker sledges glide on wooden runners, pushed and steered by two men traditionally dressed in white cotton clothes and a straw hat, using their rubber-soled boots as brakes. |
The downhill journey to Funchal is made in about 10 minutes on a total course of 2 km, reaching at times a speed of 48 km/hour. Adventurous, yet safe, an ‘old-fashioned’ toboggan ride to make your way down from Monte is the perfect contrast to the high-technology cable car going up to Monte. Don’t miss out on it! http://www.madeira-web.com/PagesUK/monte-toboggan.html |

The Cathedral from Funchal (Sé) The Church of Santa Maria was built by order of King Manuel I to replace the Church of Our Lady of Calhau, in the island’s first ever parish, as it was too small to house the growing number of faithful. The new Church of Santa Maria or «the Big Church», as it was then referred to, was dedicated to Our Lady of the Assumption and occupied an area in the historical centre then known as Largo do Duque.
