Tur med DIS-Norge (nå Slekt og Data) til USA

Lørdag, 25. september 2010
1 dag

Program:

Vi flyr med Icelandair kl 14 45 og ankommer
Minneapolis kl 17 55 lokal tid.

På veien var vi innom Reykjavik.
Flybytte der.

Vi kjører til hotellet som ligger like ved, her bor vi to netter.
(Quality Inn, Bloomington)

Flyturen gikk greit, men Icelandair hadde tatt med for
lite mat.

Her
renner Minnesota River ut i Mississippi River.

Colonel Josiah Snelling commanded the 5th Infantry Regiment (United States). Its soldiers constructed the original Fort Saint Anthony from 1820 to 1824. During construction, most soldiers lived at Camp Coldwater, which provided drinking water to the fort throughout the 19th century. The post surgeon began recording meteorological observations at Fort Saint Anthony in January 1820, beginning one of the longest near-continuous weather records in the country. Upon its completion in 1825, the Army renamed the fort as 'Fort Snelling in
honor of its commander and architect.

senator.

Ved Capitol var det en fin park. I parken var monumentene
"Spiral for Justice" og "monument to the living".

The Kensington Runestone has
been the subject of discussion
and controversy since its
discovery in 1898 by a Swedish
farmer, named Olof Ohman, while
clearing land for his farm near
Kensington, Minnesota
(45* 48' 46.17"N - 95* 40' 01.53").
Due to inherent skepticism, and
the fact that Olof was himself
Swedish, many people thought the
stone was a forgery.

This controversy has existed for over 100 years up
until
this very time. Well the controversy is over.
There is now physical proof that the runestone is
authentic and
plays a large role in American history.
The Kensington Runestone, pictured above, is 31
inches high, 16 inches wide, six inches thick and
weighs 202 pounds.
On the face and one side are
characters known as "runes", a
type of writing used
in the Middle Ages only by inhabitants of
northwestern Europe, such as the Norwegians,
Danes, and
Gotland Islanders.

Fort Juelson, designated 21OT198 in the state archaeological inventory, is a historic site located east of Underwood,
Minnesota, United States. An earthen fort was built at this
hilltop in July 1876 after rumors of Indian attacks in Foxhome,
French, and Fergus Falls following the Battle of Little Bighorn in Montana.

Many settlers left the area. Charles A. Dollner, a local merchant, suggested the rest of the people band together and build the fortification under leadership of two American Civil War
veterans, Hans Juelson and Berge O. Lee. The scare proved to be
a hoax, and the fort was never used for defensive purposes.
Remnants of the sod barricade are still on the site.

4. dag,

Program: Vi begynner med å besøke Hjemkomstmuseet i
Moorhead, Minnesota.

Sons of Norway losjen, Kringen Lodge.

renner ut i Lake Winnipeg.

over Atlanteren tilBergen.
På Hjemkomstmuseet står også en kopi av
Hopperstad stavkirke i Sogn.

Kringen Lodge.  Vi spiste lunsj på Kringen Lodge.

It is visible from Interstate 94, overlooking the city from above the James River valley. The statue is a significant tourist draw for Jamestown and the source of its nickname, The Buffalo City.

The sculpture is 26 feet (7.9 m) tall and 46 feet (14 m) long and weighs 60 short tons (54 t). It was constructed with stucco and cement around a steel beam frame shaped with wire mesh.[citation needed]

The sculpture is complete in many respects of detail. It is sculptured after a male bison in mid-stride and is anatomically correct.

Prærie, betegnelse på vidstrakte, treløse gressletter;
The Great Plains, dekket av kort gress (short grass plains).

There is also a hotel on site which gives people the opportunity to

Located 3 miles Northwest of Hendricks is Singsaas Lutheran Church. Established by Norwegian settlers on October 26, 1874;
Singsaas Lutheran Church at over 135 years old is on the
National Register of Historic Places. This makes it one of the oldest Prairie Churches in the country that still holds weekly services.
Every Christmas Singsaas puts out a CD of their annual

There are also many recreational opportunities in Hendricks.
It is home to Lake Hendricks, with an attached park.
It has a nine-hole golf course in town with a newly constructed

The first settlers to the Hendricks area, from Singsas Norway,

After immigrating to the US, they continued to worship
together in their homes until 1884, when the first Singsaas

original Singsas, Norway church, adding a unique
continuity to the life of these prairie settlers.

The industrious farmers Ola and Per are the main
characters of a quite revealing Norwegian-American
comic strip that was made between 1918 and 1935 by
the farmer-poet Peter Julius Rosendahl (1878-1942),
a native of Spring Grove in Minnesota.

Norsvin Mill på Vesterheim
Museum i Decorah.

Knut Norsvin is reputed to have brought his millstones from Norway because he had heard there were no such stones to be
had in America.
His grandson, Knut Norswing, visiting Norway in 1925, found a grist mill such as his grandfather would have had, and presented
it to Vesterheim so that Norsvin’s millstones would be properly stored.
When in use, millstones would be mounted on a vertical shaft and
a flume would carry water to activate a horizontal waterwheel
at the base of the shaft, causing
the stones to turn and grind the grain.vesterheim.org

9. dag,

Program: Etter frokost avlegger vi Norwegian American GenealogicalCenter and Naeseth Library i Madison

flyplassen O´Hare.Hotell Holiday Inn & Suites.

Chicago is the third most populous city in the United States, after
New York City and Los Angeles. With 2.7 million residents, it is the
most populous city in both the U.S. state of Illinois and the
Midwestern United States. Its metropolitan area, sometimes called Chicagoland, is home to 9.5 million people and is the third-largest
in the United States. Chicago is the seat of Cook County.

Chicago was incorporated as a city in 1837, near a portage between
the Great Lakes and the Mississippi River watershed, and
experienced rapid growth in the mid-nineteenth century.

in 1926, it took the form of a grand movie palace with exotic architecture inspired by India. -

10. dag,

New York
dag i New York.
Vi tar for oss Brooklyn første dagen og Manhattan "by night"

Hotel Sleep Inn, Brooklyn

New York City, offisielt kalt City of New York, er den største
byen
i USA. Byen ligger i delstaten New York og har 8,5 millioner innbyggere. Storbyområdet New York (New York metropolitan
New York består av fem bydeler (boroughs):

The museum is located in the Main Building of the former
immigration station complex. The French Renaissance Revival structure, restored to its 1918 - 1924 appearance, tells the moving tales of the 12 million immigrants who entered America through
the golden door of Ellis Island. Today, the descendants of those immigrants account for almost half of the American people.

Vi spiste i nærheten av
Times Square, på litt
forskjellige spisesteder.
Noen av oss havnet på
Bubba Gump. Der serverer
de mest reker,
men for meg og en til i

oppholde i USA.

Ground Zero mm.
